FAQs
Here are some of the more common questions about participate in our hikes. If you are new to our hikes, please also read the New Hiker Guide.
Hikes
Do I need to be an SV to participate?
Yes. While the hikes take place in public places, the hikes we organise are for SVs only. This is to reinforce bonding between SVs and promote better standards of fitness amongst SVs.
When do the hikes take place?
Our regular hiking time is Sunday mornings at 0600. (Late by military standards!). It’s been done this way to get a decent length of hike in and also not to eat into too much of your Sunday morning.
How do I sign up for a hike?
Signing up for a hike is compulsory so that we can plan appropriate safety measures and logistic support. Each posted hike will have a sign up link to it.
Do I need to wear my issued boots?
No, you do not but you are encouraged to wear them in. Regular use makes them more comfortable! Unused boots harden and get moldy, and if you only use them once a year for deployments, good luck to you! (They have been known to disintegrate with no use).
Do I have to carry a load?
No, carrying a load is optional. However, as SVs you are encouraged to maintain a standard level of fitness and an ability to carry a load. Something like a 6-7kg is reasonable as a starting point and represents your LBS/LBV weight (without field pack or weapon).
Can I wear my field pack or other SAF issued gear?
We discourage wearing any other officially issued items other than your boots and field pack. If you are going to use your field pack, please ensure that you cover it with a civilian rain cover. The reason for this is to protect the reputation of the Corps.

Safety
Who is liable if something happens during the hike?
Our hikes are informal and voluntary gathering of individual SVs. As such, you assume the necessary liability by participating in these hikes. Please make sure you have the necessary health and accident coverage if you need it.
What safety measures are implemented during the hikes?
We conduct a pre-hike safety briefing for all our hikes along making sure that the group leaders all have first aid kits on them. We monitor the pace of the hike to ensure it is suitable for the route and hikers ability. Adverse weather conditions are monitored as needed.
How much water should I bring?
Staying hydrated during the hike is your responsibility and the amount of water depends on your own individual consumption. We suggest bringing enough water to last you at a rate of 500ml per half an hour for regular hikes.
What should I do if I feel unwell?
Participating in the hikes is completely optional. If you feel unwell and are unlikely to be able to take part in a hike, stay at home and rest. If you feel unwell during the hike, please inform the Team or Group Leader immediately so they can monitor and help take the correct action.
Do we still go if it rains?
Generally, the answer is yes, we are still a go with the exception being if a CAT 1 is called in the hike area and is in force. If a CAT 1 is called, we will monitor the situation and make a call based on conditions on the ground.
