Online Talk: Physical and Physiological Challenges of High Altitude Expedition

Hiking at high altitude poses real challenges that hikers must consider and prepare for. While it might be daunting, understanding your body’s response to altitude is key to a successful trek. Knowing how to handle Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can really make the difference in shaping your experience for the better.

The SAFVC EBC team is organising at talk on Physical and Physiological Challenges of High Altitude Expedition on 16 March on Zoom, where a panel of experts will share their thoughts on the challenges of hiking at altitude and common issues faced during these types of expeditions. Whether you’re gearing up to take Everest Base Camp, still deciding whether to join, or just simply want to improve your knowledge for your own hikes, this talk will be invaluable for your preparations.

  • Priority will be given to those SVs registered for the EBC Expeditions in Packet order (i.e. 0/1/2/3/4) and then all other SVs.

  • Confirmation will be sent once registration closes.

  • This will be a Zoom session and details will be sent via email once your slot is confirmed.

  • There is no charge to attend this event.

About the Speakers

LTC(DR) Jonathan Kwong
Head, Crew Safety and Flight Environment Branch, RSAF Aeromedical Centre

LTC(DR) Jonathan “Jonk” Kwong is a family physician and aviation medical officer with the RSAF Medical Service. He completed advanced training in Aviation Medicine in 2017 and Family Medicine Residency Training in 2017 with NUHS in 2022. Currently, he serves as the Head of Crew Safety and Flight Environment Branch at the RSAF Aeromedical Centre. Additionally, he holds roles as the AFMS Innovation Offcers and is one of the SAF Medical Corps’ Mentoring Leads, dedicating himself to enhancing SAF’s organisational capacity and capability.

MAJ(DR) Ryan Yuan
Staff Officer, RSAF Aeromedical Centre

MAJ(DR) Ryan “Mahoney” Yuan is an aviation medical officer with the RSAF Medical Service. He completed his Aviation Medicine Advanced Specialty Training in 2023 and now serves as a Staff Officer at the RSAF Aeromedical Centre, overseeing aviation physiology training and ensuring aeromedical safety. He works with the RSAF’s safety inspectorate and aircrew equipment engineering branch on matters of human factors and flight safety, aircrew safety equipment, and physiological protection.

Dr. Kumaran Rasappan
Consultant, Department of Orthapaedic Surgery, National University Hospital

Dr. Kumaran Rasappan made history as the first Singaporean doctor to summit Mt. Everest and the first to climb the world’s largest peaks for charity. He was honored with the Singapore Youth Award and the ASEAN Youth Award in 2014 for his remarkable achievements. Alongside his wife, Dr. Gayathri Devi Nadarajan, Dr. Kumaran annually leads Singaporean medical students and doctors to Nepal, providing essential humanitarian aid to the Sherpas and Nepali villagers they’ve come to call friends.
